Natalie Blundell: Personal Biography

I grew up in Harden, where my love for horses began at a very young age. Thanks to my mother, who shared my passion, I was riding before I could even remember. I joined Pony Club at the age of four and went on to achieve great things in the sport, including winning the Pony Club State Dressage Championships at 15. I also competed at the National Pony Club Championships, where I placed third. During my youth, I developed a strong connection to the Australian Thoroughbred while working with racehorses in track work before school, eventually becoming an amateur jockey.

After finishing school, I had the incredible opportunity to train under the guidance of Heath and Rozzie Ryan, which played a pivotal role in shaping my career. With the generous support of local couple Phil and Mary Hockney, they purchased a horse for me to train with — Billy Bathgate. Billy took me from Pony Club to winning the first CCI** in the Southern Hemisphere** at the age of 19 at Adelaide, marking a milestone in my eventing career. We also represented Australia at the Trans Tasman Championships in New Zealand and were selected for the Elite Squad for the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Unfortunately, a training injury ended our Olympic dreams, but the experience was invaluable.

Next came the incredible Algebra, a thoroughbred that initially arrived in my stable as a horse to be sold. Owners Julia McLean and John Glenn had brought him to me at a novice level, and together we discovered his incredible potential. We went on to win two Trans Tasman Team events and secured multiple top finishes, including 2nd, 4th, and 8th at the CCI** in Adelaide.

As part of our development, we traveled to the UK and Germany for a training tour, where I spent five months with Andrew Hoy, a seven-time Olympian and triple gold medalist. During this time, we achieved 8th place at Wiesbaden CIC* and 13th at Luhmühlen CCI** in Germany**, gaining priceless experience on the international stage. Algebra and I were later selected as reserves for the World Equestrian Games in France, which led to an unforgettable training experience with the Australian Team at the Unicorn Trust Centre in Stow, UK.

Though I wasn’t able to compete in France, our journey continued with the Burghley CCI****, where unfortunately, our good run ended with a fall on the cross-country course. Despite this setback, the experience was a vital part of my growth as a rider and trainer.

Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to gain invaluable experience, working with some of the best in the sport. I am now focused on bringing that knowledge and expertise back to Australia, with the goal of supporting the next generation of eventing riders and continuing to grow the sport in this country.
